Ten projects with social business potential were identified by students studying Management of Social Innovations of the University of Applied Sciences Munich for Genisis’ new event format "Germany is looking for its social heroes".
They have been presented at a public event at the University of Munich in front of a high-ranked, interdisciplinary jury, which chose four projects sharing the top three positions.
Winner is the restaurant Roeckl, where three of Munich’s top restaurateurs train deprived young people. It’s the first time that the successful concept, which was developed by the British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, is implemented in Germany.
The "Social Sense gGmbH" ranked second best. This initiative as well takes care of young people who have difficulties on the regular vocational training market. It offers an apprenticeship as certified housekeeping assistant to 33 young women.
The third place is shared by the projects “Heim-statt Tschernobyl e.V." and "Social Affairs". The members of “Heim-statt Tschernobyl e.V.” support families to move away from areas in Belarus, which have been contaminated during the nuclear reactor catastrophe at Chernobyl. The association has received the Marion Doenhoff subsidy award. It is funded through the income of a wind power station, which it has installed near Chernobyl. The goal of "Social Affairs" is to use know-how from science, technology and business development for social projects.
All four winners will be presented by the students who have “discovered” the initiatives at the 3rd VISION SUMMIT in Berlin, taking place from 4-8 November, 2009. In a next step the Genisis Institute and its partners from the University of Munich and Schweisfurth Foundation will work on a manual for regional initiatives across Germany to identify regional social heroes with the help of similar events.
